Jean Vuillaime and Françoise De La Serlande a Life Sketch
Daniel Troublefield, 6 Jan-25 Jan 2022

Jean Vuillaime and Françoise de la Serlande were residents of Sedan, an independent principality within France, in the region of the Ardennes Forest. The couple married at Sedan on 30 March 1589 when Françoise was a widow and Jean was a cloth weaver ("serger"). Jean was likely older than Françoise because of the financial need to establish himself before marriage to be able to support a family. Françoise's death record on 8 July 1631, aged 68, shows that she was a 1563 native of Mouzon, a village about 11 miles southeast of Sedan. Jean's birthplace in France may have been Jametz * about 32 miles southeast of Sedan. * His probable sister Jeanne lived at Jametz when she married at Sedan in 1598. Françoise's father was Jean de la Serlande who died before her first marriage in 1585. No record of her mother has been found. Jean's parents' names have not been identified yet. The couple had at least seven children together: Jean 1591, Elisabeth 1593, Judith 1596, Jeanne the elder 1600, Jeanne the younger 1603, Daniel 1606, and Isaac 1608.

Françoise, daughter of Jean de la Serlande, deceased, first married on 20 September 1585 at Sedan to Regnaut (alias Regnard) Robelot, a taylor ("tailleur"), son of the late Nicolas Robelot. The Robelots had at least one child, a son Jean Robelot, baptized 7 January 1587 at Sedan, whose godmother was a Jeanne Robelot, possibly Regnaut's sister. Nothing further is known about Jean Robelot, Françoise's first known child. Her first husband Robelot died before Françoise's second marriage in 1589.

Jean probably married again soon after Françoise's death. Jean Vuillesme, master weaver ("maître serger"), married at Sedan on 24 April 1633 Jeanne Peratin, widow of Jean Rossignon. No further information has been found on Jeanne, the second wife, or her first husband.

The Sedan records for baptisms, marriages, and deaths are incomplete and the surviving original records are in poor condition with many names torn. Fortunately the surviving records have been transcribed and digitized on FamilySearch.

The spelling of surnames in the Sedan records took many forms: For Françoise: de la Sorlode (1585 first marriage), de la Cerlome (first child's baptism 1587), De la Serlande (1591, 1593, 1596 baptisms), and De la Cerlande (1589, 1600, 1603 marriage and baptisms). Sometimes the surname was written with the particle "de" (for "of") and other times without the particle. For Jean: Huilaume (1589 marriage), Willaume (1591 baptism), Villams (1591 baptism), Vuillaime (1593 baptism), Vuillame (1596 baptism), Huiliaume (1599 and 1604 baptisms; the only spelling used twice), Huilliaume (1600 baptism), Huyleaume (1602 baptism), Huiliëme (1603 baptism), Guillaume (1605 baptism), Huillaime (1631 death), Huillame (1632 death), and Vuillesme (1633 marriage). This summary of spellings includes baptism records where Jean and Françoise were godparents of other couple's children.

(Cannot find any other record of Jeanne Peratin or Jean Rossignon to help with their birthdates so as to determine if Jean Vuillesme, master serger at Sedan, is a good match for our Jean Vuillaime, serger, at Sedan, whose wife Françoise died two years before this marriage in 1631.)
