Nathaniel Basse and his wife had gone to London, England, on business and left a nurse in charge of their children. On Good Friday, March 22, 1622, the Powhatan massacred 347 people including their 6 year old son, Humphrey. Five-year old John was rescued by the Nansemund natives.
