Thomas Bryant was the son of Keziah (Bryant) and her husband English colonist Richard Bryant. He was the brother of Dr Richard Bryant, Silent Bryant and Martha Bryant, and the husband of Eleanor.
Thomas was of mixed heritage, half English and half Patawomeck Native American, a lineal descendant of Pocahontas and Paramount Chief Wahunsenacawh.
His mother Keziah was the daughter of Chief Wahanganoche, called 'King of the Patawomeck' by Virginia colonial goverment. His father Richard Bryant was an English colonist who arrived in Virginia about 1650 or before.
Patawomeck Tribal history says that Wahanganoche deeded land to Richard Bryant in Patawomeck Tribal lands, what became Stafford County, and that the 4 Bryant children were born there. Thomas' oldest brother Richard is believed to have been born in 1651 and his other brother Silent in 1657, Thomas was likely born about the same time.
His grandfather, Chief Wahanganoche, was falsely accused of murder in 1662 by Captain Giles Brent, the Bryant family's neighbor. Brent was of mixed heritage, his father English but his mother a Piscataway Indian, traditional enemies of the Patawomeck. Chief Wahanganoche was found innocent of all charges but was murdered returning home from the trial.
In 1665 the Patawomeck were required to sell all their tribal lands to the English to build a fort. The Bryant property was not effected because is was no longer Indian owned but belonged to the Bryant family.
In 1666, the governor's Council declared war on the Patawomeck, calling for "their utter destruction if possible and that their women and children and their goods … shall be taken to be disposed of."
Thomas would have been a child when all of this occurred. As the son of an Englishman, he and his brothers and sister would have escaped the persecution that destroyed most of the rest of the Patawomeck Tribe. The persecution of his Patawomeck relatives and his own mixed ancestry would have strongly influenced his life.
Sometime prior to 1692 Thomas married Eleanor, identified as his Indian housekeeper, and he and his brother Silent both moved their families away from Stafford. They settled farther down the Northern Neck, in Essex and Richmond Counties.
Thomas Bryant, Sr appears in Richmond County Court records dated 5 May 1692, to help appraise an estate, therefore we know he was established there well prior to this date.
Thomas Bryant Sr (sometimes recorded as Bryan) wrote his last will and testament on 26 October 1717. On 8 January 1719 his wife Eleanor wrote her will in which she was identified as his relict and executrix. Therefore we know he died sometime between those dates and was survived by Eleanor.
Also named in court records are his children:
- John Bryant, identified as eldest son
- Thomas Bryant
- Winifred Bryant, married McKay
- Margaret Bryant, married Brannan
- Mary Bryant
- George Bryant, born 1699, died before 1717
