From Frances Potter Neal's history of the Broughton family:
"Edward was a planter and stock raiser, had vast acres in Santee River Swamp which was subject to overflow. [About] 1830 with slave labor he built a mound in the swamp for cattle when overflow came — was well above flood stage and was never covered with water until 1916. That part of estate was sold to Brooklyn Cooperage Company. Later was taken in the Cooper Santee Resort Project."

  ,
daughter of John Henry Broughton and Margaret (Peggy) Wright,
born at Greene County [Georgia, United States] on 5 December 1817,

Find a Grave - Memorial Text,
Epsie was born in either Greensboro, Georgia or Abbeville, SC (most likely on her father's plantation in Greene County, GA) and married Edward N. Broughton in 1838, moving to his home in Sumter District, SC. They had three children (Letitia, John Ragin, and Margaret) before Edward died at age 31. Epsie returned to her family in Georgia after her husband's death and helped on her father's plantation. After her father John Henry Broughton's death she emigrated to Arkansas in 1859 with her younger children, where Letitia had already moved with her husband. Epsie is listed in the 1860 Ouachita County census on pages 497-498. According to an obituary written by her pastor and published in the Arkansas Methodist Newspaper on April 7, 1910, she joined the Methodist church when she was 15 and remained a lifelong Methodist.
The obituary published in the Warren paper stated that funeral services were held at the Methodist church and that at the time of her death she was "likely the oldest person in the county."
To clarify, Epsie's maiden and married surnames are both Broughton.

Died (91 years old) at Warren [Arkansas, United States] on 25 October 1909,
buried at Warren [Arkansas, United States] [Oakland Cemetery].
