Will was a partner with Walter McLeod in a dry goods store on Main Street in Warren. After he sold the store in 1932, he and his wife Pearl operated a school store and cafeteria out of their home, which was across the street from the high school at 210 West Pine Street (sold notebooks, burgers, candy, soda, etc). In her memoir, Pearl wrote that Will passed away after only a week's illness. Pearl lived another twenty years and now they're reunited in adjoining graves.

Originally a teacher in York County, South Carolina, she met her future husband while visiting cousins in Arkansas. She and Will were married at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (her family's church near Rock Hill) in 1907 and had four children whom they raised in Warren. She taught elementary school and her husband Will ran a dry goods store. In 1908 they bought a house on South Myrtle, and in 1923 moved to 409 North Walnut, then after all the children were grown, in 1934 moved to 210 West Pine Street. In 1932 Will sold his store and together they ran a little cafeteria at the front of their house across from the high school; she said they sold burgers for 10 cents and also soft drinks and candy.
Pearl had a serious illness in October 1945 and was in the hospital in Little Rock for two months. For the rest of her life, her legs were periodically numb and she had to use a cane. Will died after a brief illness in 1949. In 1960, Pearl decided to sell their homeplace in Warren and take turns living with her son Sam in South Carolina (summer) and her daughter Frances in Florida (winter). She was living with Frances in Leesburg at the time of her death. Her funeral was held at First Presbyterian Church (Warren, Arkansas) on December 22, 1969.
In her memoir (May 1963) she wrote: "I am happy and loved and enjoy life and am real active for my age. I never miss church and have many friends everywhere I have lived. I wish each of my children and grandchildren long happy and useful Christian lives."
From the Warren "Eagle Democrat", Wednesday June 12, 1985, p. 9:
"I flashed back once more to Mrs. Pearl Broughton's little store just across the street from WHS. There was more penny candy packed in that little space than most supermarkets devote to vegetables now."
